Local author and Holocaust survivor shares her story, and those of her schoolmates in Amsterdam
Storming the Tulips, originally written in Dutch and recently revised and translated by Hannie J. Voyles, is an intimate encounter with history, as told by twenty former students of Hannie’s elementary school, the 1st Montessori School in Amsterdam - the same school attended by Anne Frank. After Hannie immigrated to the U.S. from Amsterdam, she studied English and Linguistics and then joined the faculty of California State University before becoming Head of the Language Department at Butte College. Alicia Funk first learned plant-based medicine in 1990 from an indigenous grandmother in Ecuador’s rainforest. In his new book, We Poked a Hole in the Wind, Loyal McCammond shares the story of the trail ride that took him, his good friend Bert, three mules, and two horses across four states, 700 plus miles, and three major deserts to fulfill a dream. Readers share the trials and tribulations, as well as the astounding beauty and sense of accomplishment, the riders encountered on their journey. Loyal McCammond was on active duty for the U.S. Army for twenty years before being appointed Sheriff of Greeley County Kansas. He is now retired and lives in Orland with his wife, Rose.
